Houston was the leading named city in the statewide December records for pedestrian-involved crashes. TxDOT records used in this analysis list 795 pedestrian involved crashes in Texas from 2024-12-01 through 2024-12-31, subject to the filters described in the methods. Houston recorded 122 of the crashes included in this analysis. Houston recorded the most crashes among the categories shown.
Houston’s total stood above the next-largest category shown, Unknown (9999), which represents records without a usable city designation rather than another Texas city. Houston recorded 122 crashes compared with 99 for Unknown (9999), a difference of 23 crashes. San Antonio and Dallas were the other named cities nearest Houston in the displayed ranking, but neither matched Houston’s reported-crash count.
Crash count and severe outcomes are not the same ranking
The count leader was not the leader in fatal or suspected serious-injury crash events among the categories shown. Unknown (9999) recorded 39 fatal or suspected serious-injury crashes compared with 34 for Houston—about 1.1 times the count. This comparison is between the categories shown. For Houston, the featured crash total included fatal and suspected serious-injury crashes, as well as fatal crashes. Houston recorded 122 crashes, including 34 fatal or suspected serious-injury crashes and 13 fatal crashes.
That distinction matters when reading a city ranking: reported crash totals describe where the most events were recorded in this statewide set, while severity counts describe a different outcome within those events. Deaths and suspected serious injuries are counts of people, not interchangeable with crash counts.
These figures cover reported crashes during the stated December period and do not account for how much walking, driving or other travel occurred in Houston or elsewhere at the time. They therefore show reported counts, not an individual’s crash risk or a rate of crashes.
