How we use crash data

Our reporting uses publicly available TxDOT crash extracts. Each article identifies its geography, date range, crash types and grouping, alongside the statistics supporting its findings.

Reported crash counts are not measures of risk per trip or mile. Fatal crashes count events; deaths and injuries count people. These measures are not interchangeable.

The supplied extraction intervals do not guarantee that every crash has been reported. Missing fields, reporting delays and later amendments can affect the results. Road names may have spelling or directional variants. Article-specific methods explain the relevant limitations.

We retain the research query and source information behind each article. No affiliation with or endorsement by TxDOT is implied.

About advertisements

This publication displays clearly labelled advertisements. Advertisement links open the advertiser’s website. Advertising is separate from the crash-data findings; an advertisement is not a finding from the records or an endorsement by TxDOT.
